Street of the Month
Paris, France
Rue Crémieux, Paris
A short, pastel-painted pedestrian street in the 12th arrondissement, and a lesson in visiting gently.
Rue Crémieux sits a few minutes from Gare de Lyon, and it is easy to walk straight past the entrance without realising what lies behind it. Step in and the city's grey and cream palette suddenly gives way to houses painted in pale pinks, mint, lemon and sky blue, each with its own shutters, potted plants and small decorative touches.
It is one of the most photographed little streets in Paris, which is exactly why it deserves a careful visit. People live here. Front doors open directly onto the paving, and the residents have, at times, spoken publicly about the pressure of constant photo shoots. A good visit is short, quiet and observant.
Come for the colour, but stay for the details: trompe-l'oeil touches, the way the light moves along the facades, and the sense of a village lane tucked inside a busy arrondissement.
Why we chose it
We chose Rue Crémieux because it shows, in barely 150 metres, everything a single street can offer: colour, character, and a reminder that the places we admire are someone's home. It is the perfect start for a publication about walking slowly and respectfully.
